Steel and cable, 20'h x 192' x 124'
Wards Island, NYC
This large scale array of open forms suggests the spaces within a Mayan city. The structure consists of twenty-foot tall towers and ten-foot tall gates that are spanned by forty-foot long tension trusses. The structure was designed for this sloping site on the East river in New York City. Welded steel modules were constructed at my shop over a two month period. The parts were transported to the site and assembled in four days. Because of its tectonic efficiency and striking lightness in relation to its size, the work seems to obey the structural rules of a much smaller scale.
